How the Forestry Safety Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Came to Be

The idea of Sectoral Safety Councils has been around since the 1990s.

The concept is simple: A better overall safety performance can be expected if a given industrial sector develops its own safety standards, practices and management systems, rather than having it come from external sources.

Under the guidance of WHSCC, Government Services (OHS), the Employers Council and the Federation of Labour, the NL Construction Safety Association was formed in 1996.

The concept proved to be extremely successful with a significant reduction in accidents over time, while at the same time, experiencing a significant increase in the construction industry workforce.

With this model to follow, forestry was targeted as the next Sector to come on board.

July 2008 - Forest Industry Governance Committee formed.

July 2009 - The Forest Safety Association of Newfoundland and Labrador became incorporated.
